There are two sets of standards issued by ANSI in the filtration industry. The first standard is concerned with the health of waters. This standard ensures that specific contaminants are removed from the water before being termed and suitable for drinking or using in a certain application. The second standard deals with the aesthetics of waters. These aesthetics include issues such as taste and appearance of waters. Certification may specify one or both standards.

Filtering of water is employed in several different applications. For example, this process helps aid organizations to supply clean water to victims during humanitarian emergencies. The military also uses them heavily during operations in places without enough drinkable waters. These devices come in handy in filtering waters for military personnel.
