Homeless Outreach Programs And Their Advantages

By Richard Scott

Poverty is one of the most common issues that the world has been dealing with today. There are already a lot of ways which are being done in order to prevent them and help those people who are in need. It does not only affect those who are experiencing it but as well as everyone and the country. Two most common effects brought by poverty are illness and ignorance which are keeping people in their state.

Aside from people, the world entirely has been affected as well by the poverty issue which made it become more prominent to different areas, most especially in developing countries. Almost all people who are experiencing poverty are not capable of providing their own basic needs such as a home. One very sad thing which they can surely think of is they do not have somewhere to go. But fortunately, homeless outreach in Maui is now conducted for helping these people.

Aside from that, many people would also turn to homeless shelters for them to have a temporary living. They can stay in these centers for a short period of time or until when they can have their life back on the track. A lot of them have been taking advantage on these shelters because they know they are sleeping in a safe place. The shelters come with other numerous services including soup kitchens and job trainings.

Non profit organizations are those who commonly provide these shelters and they could be the government or the churches. Homeless shelters have become more and more popular in various places. And since there is a continuous growth of the poverty rate, the result will be an increase of shelters as well.

There are 4 models and also management philosophies that are being considered as alternatives. The first one is housing first practice. The so called temporary homes act as the emergency shelter systems, holding only a small fraction of rapid increase of the homeless population. This would serve as alternative for current networks. The program is targeting the large problem that lacks housing affordability.

The methodology attempts in placing back the homeless families to their independent living as soon as possible. This has achieved its success based on the fact that these families become more responsive to the support of social services if they live their own housing. Through this, the families are given with affordable rentals, 6 months to 1 year social service, and crisis intervention.

Empowerment model. This is another alternative in which participants are being empowered and not serving clients. The main goal is becoming agents in own destinies and futures. In this model, to assist participants is the main focus for their rights to be accessed and responsibilities to be fulfilled as citizens. This may include financial contributions.

Religious shelters. Multiple churches and synagogue congregations are in coordination to this. Its main purpose is to link up opportunities of nighttime shelter. And usually, these are affiliated with those faith based groups for community services.

Vehicle as shelter. Some homeless people are camping out with the use of their cars with coordination and support of the non profit groups. These individuals are those who were not able to afford their rents or mortgages. Good thing is they still have some support structures including cars, insurances, and jobs.
