Introduced in 1980 in the United States, these dogs are a mix of the Papillon the Maltese and the Japanese Chin. Most will say that it is an American bred breed. It is a dog that is classified in the toy size and does not grow over one foot in height even at adult age. It also reaches on average five to ten pounds in weight at maturity.

This breed has a very even temperament and is very sociable. Due to this they also love to be around children and are quite playful too. They only bark when they are threatened and are very alert and affectionate. Quite a few are used as therapy dogs in hospital.

The diet of this breed should consist more of dry food than raw food. This is because the Mi Ki is very active and playful, they need a constant supply of glucose that can best be provided by dry food. Due to the mi ki being very intelligent, training it becomes quite a joy. It is recommended that these dogs be trained once they are at least three months old. Dogs of this breed love to please their masters which adds to their ease of training.

Lifespan wise, they are fairly long lived for their size, around thirteen to fourteen years. In comparison, the French bulldog, which is a slightly bigger only has a lifespan of eight to ten years. They are also very resilient with no breed specific health issues, but they will from time to time suffer from respiratory disorders. In general they should be always checked for general ailments that affect any dog.
