When It Comes To Dog Grooming Duncan Dogs Can Learn To Love It

By Susan Hamilton

Not all dogs enjoy a trip the groomer. Some dislike it almost as much as a trip the vet. They may try to run off, hold firm to their stance outside the door, or cry to get out of going. However, it doesn't have to be this way. When it comes to dog grooming Duncan dogs can learn to love it, or at the very least not dread it. It just requires a bit of time and effort on the part of the pet parent.

Start early. When the pup is brought home, bring home a brush and use it daily. The earlier the canine gets used to being brushed and combed, the better. Often pet-parents wait until the pup is older to begin, it's much better to start as soon as he or she is in the home. They may not need brushing, but, they will benefit from it.

Get the pooch used to the way a groomer will touch them. Life the pups legs and touch them, get the puppy used to having its faced touched. Make it a point to mimic any motions that the person who will groom the pet will use. When a pet is used to these movements and motions, they are more relaxed.

Sound is something else that can cause a pup to feel scared and nervous. Instead of letting the puppy walk into this blindly, mimic the sounds at home. Turn on the blow dryer and let the animal know that it won't hurt them. Run the water, turn on a pair of clippers. Do this several times so the animal accepts them as normal household sounds. This lets them know that the sounds don't indicate danger.

Socialize the animal as much as possible. Socialization is always important for any dogs, so this step will help with much more than the animal's time at the salon, it will help in everyday situations as well. The more socialized that a dog is, the better for him or her. A well socialized dog is a happy dog.

Take the time to learn about the breed that you've chosen. Some breeds need a lot of grooming, while others are a much easier to keep neat. As a rule, the long haired breeds need to be brushed more often. If they aren't, they will get mats which are unsightly and painful to the animal.

Even when you take your canine for regular visits to their and your favorite grooming establishment, brushing is still necessary at home. Dogs with long hair should be brushed out daily, while those who have short hair can be brushed less often, they still enjoy a good brushing. It feels great and is a good time to have some one-on-one time with your pet.

Follow the above tips to make your pets time at the salon a happier and more positive experience for the animal. He or she will benefit from your effort to get him or her accustomed to what happens at the salon. Your pooch will also benefit from your efforts to keep him or her tangle-free. Some dogs actually learn to enjoy their spa days, it all depends on how the owner prepares the dog and also how the owner feels about the process. Make it as positive as possible and the pup will think of it as a good thing as well. Visits to the groomer are just one more way to show your furry family member how much it's loved.
