Merchandising Security Services And Theft Detection Systems

By Barbara Bennett

While most retail outlets use a number of different security services and devices, some are better than others. In addition, there are now merchandising security services offering 24/7 360 views of all areas of a location. As such, it is important to research all options before signing on with a security firm or service.

In most cases, electronic surveillance is a technical method used to prevent shoplifting in the retail market. Whereas, pilferage of books from libraries or office supplies from buildings is also a concern. In most cases, fixed tags are placed on books and theft devices are attached to merchandise, though this is not always the case.

When tags are attached, cashiers, library staff and clerks often remove the tags during the check-out process. Although, after a number of retail establishment saw a rise in the number of losses over the last few years, merchandisers began helping by encasing the tags inside the packaging of various products. As such, thieves would have to open the package to remove a tag which can often be more difficult to remove without getting caught.

While most all retail outlets and libraries have security alarms and devices, there are often several options and types. In some cases, the tags are magnetostrictive, acousto-magnetic, microwave based, work on radio frequency, are magneto-harmonic or electro-magnetic. In all cases, the device sounds an alarm if a tag is not removed from a product when leaving the establishment.

When selecting a detection device system, efficiency is an important factor. For, removing detection devices which are difficult and timely can often be a set back. Whereas, if unwarranted alarms are caused by tags which have been scanned though not removed correctly, customers can often become extremely annoyed and may not return to the retailer in the future.

Most well informed shoplifters and thieves are aware of how these tags work and how to remove the tags quickly and easily without notice. Whether removing the tag, placing it between thick fabric or using a booster tag, most shoplifters will find a way to avoid paying for an item. While often more difficult, most will find a way to remove the tag before leaving an establishment.

While this is the case, most shoplifters actually either miss or fail to deactivate or remove a tag from pieces of clothing and still get caught. Whereas, as a service to retail outlets, a number of manufacturers are now integrating security tags inside the packaging of products. As such, a shoplifter would have to open the package to remove the device, an action which could very well be questioned at the check out counter.

A number of tools related to shoplifting are also illegal in some areas and can often be used as evidence against those committing the crime. Hence, shoplifters whom are not aware of these tools often have a greater risk of getting caught. While this is the case, individuals using the tools to remove tags in the United States and United Kingdom can be arrested for suspicion of theft or being equipped for stealing without having shoplifted at the time. As such, it is always best just to pay for merchandise. For, if an individual can not afford the product, chances are fines and potential jail time will be far more costly in the long run.
