What To Remember When Visiting A Plant Nursery

By Elizabeth Sullivan

If you are planting a garden or doing any landscaping on a large scale you know how essential the right vegetation is to making your space look good. A plant nursery may have many suitable choices available but if you do not know what you are looking for you may not have as much luck making your outdoor spaces looking their best. Here is how to choose plants which are healthy and which will work well in the environment you have chosen from them.

Plants need three things to do well. The first is sunlight. Different plants need varying amounts of sun and shade in order to be healthy. You need to look at your garden or yard and figure out how much light a particular plant will receive during the day. Then you can look at vegetation that will work well in the lighting conditions you are dealing with.

Soil can range in quality from nutrient-dense to nutrient-scarce. There may also be differences in the pH or amount of acidity or alkalinity that is the earth. Some plants need specific conditions to be present in order to grow. If this is the case with the plants you are interested in, speaking with a nursery staff member may help you determine what products or substances you need to add to the soil in order to optimize plant growth.

You also need to know how much water your choices will need to do well and whether you need to add any nutrients to the hydration you are providing. A good nursery should have a variety of foods and fertilizers on hand that will keep your greenery healthy and beautiful all through the growing season.

Once you have this basic information you can then start looking at nurseries in order to find out which plants they have which will suit your needs and growing conditions. You may want to look online for plants which will do well in the conditions you have to offer and then start looking at nurseries to see if they have the specific types that you want to add to your yard.

Of course, not every nursery will have plants that you will want to add to your garden or landscape. If you visit a facility and the plants are unhealthy looking or they are infested with insects it might be a good idea to buy your specimens elsewhere. That way you know you are not introducing outside contaminants that could cause your garden to fail.

It's always a good idea to speak with nursery employees about the species you want to purchase. They may be able to let you know which varieties will thrive best in your area and which may be more susceptible to weather and to soil conditions. They will also give you hints about the amount of sunshine your greenery or flowers will need.

You may want to visit a nursery at a few different times during the year. If you are very inexperienced when it comes to gardening, visiting at the beginning and end of the growing season may help ensure that your vegetation will continue to do well over the winter and you may get great tips on getting your garden kick started in the spring as well.
