Tips To Get You Through American Airport Security

By Frances Wood

Whether you are traveling for the first time or are an experienced traveler, American airport security requirements must remain one of your foremost concerns. These requirements are so strict and impossible to compromise that you should be aware of them to avoid inconvenience during travel. They apply to international as well as domestic flights.

Luggage should be packed accordingly. There are restrictions on the luggage that should be in the carry-in bag and what should go to the checked-bag. Other items like spray paint, flares, ammunition and loaded guns, among others should remain at home. You are allowed to carry short tools that are less than 7 inches, scissors, common lighters and even gas cartridges in your checked luggage. Plan ahead to avoid leaving some of your items at the airport.

Packing should be meticulous and in such a way that officials will not be required to handle unnecessarily handle your belongings. Imagine that you will undergo visual inspection. This should guide you to place your items like tooth brush and inner wears safely tucked. Make your bag easier to inspect by layering.

Dress in a way that makes it easier for you to undergo the security checks. This means lose cloths and shoes. Leave home cloths like belts and jewelry that is heavy with metallic objects. Since jackets and coats must be subjected to x-ray, they are better left at home. Laptops are checked thoroughly today. Use the special bags that are recommended by TSA. Using these bags, you are not required to remove the laptop from its bag.

Food is allowed into a flight but there are limitations to what you can carry. Solid food is allowed but liquids, syrups and semi-liquids like jam, sauce, jellies and syrups will not be permitted if the container is more than 3.4oz. Other foods may need to be subjected to additional checks despite being allowed through clearance.

Understand how advanced imaging technology works. This is the latest screening option when you do not want to go through metal detectors. It subjects you to electromagnetic waves that produce a skeletal image of your body. The image cannot be used in any way to identify you. The waves are not harmless since they are below what your cell phone produces. This is an optional method of screening and will reveal any other objects that may be hidden in your body.

Prepare children and other travelers for screening. Everyone has to be subjected to similar scrutiny regardless of age. Explain to the children and the elderly the process they are about to undergo and its importance. This makes it easier for them to get screened by dressing them appropriately. Persons with special needs and disability should not be made to queue. Alert officials at the airport in advance.

Feel free to ask any question and assistance before your turn comes. This helps you to calm down and clear security checks without trouble. A lot of information is available on TSA website and other blogs. Be alert before traveling because clearance procedures and requirements change from time to time.
