Effective Strategies To Counter Human Trafficking

By Jeffrey Butler

Public proclamations on the end of slavery are deceitful by causing the masses to assume that human trafficking came to an end. Unfortunately, it is still thriving underground. It takes individual and community effort to counter human trafficking in its present day format. Here are ways to help stop this vice.

Demand formal papers whenever you are dealing with employees. Persons who have been trafficked usually get work or receive services without papers. This is one of the ways to perpetuate this terrible tradition. If all employers demanded papers from all the persons they served, it would be easier to stop traffickers because they would find no way of keeping their victims around.

Push corporate organizations in your radar to publicly declare their stand on the issue. This is meant to intimidate perpetrators and create a hostile environment for the vice to thrive. Once corporate organizations take a stand, others will follow suit. The people working for these organizations will also join the campaign. You have a larger group of crusaders, making it easier to achieve desired goals. They spread the demand to their suppliers, clients and associates. An entire sector will catch the fever and help end this wickedness.

Offer support in form of opportunities to freed victims. Integration into the society and living a normal life is a huge challenge for these victims. They are looking for employment for sustenance because of their experiences. They cannot compete effectively with other employees for positions. Set aside slots that will help them enjoy the advantage. By empowering the financially, they have the courage and confidence to speak out and also participate in campaigns to correct the situation.

Organize local sensitization activities to create more soldiers for a clean society. The activities should target community based organizations, religious organizations, social activities and the school system. People participating in the activities should know the signs to watch out for so that they can know that a person is being trafficked. Inform them of authorities to whom they can report such incidences. This ensures that everyone is playing his or her part in fighting the problem.

Make a professional commitment to help victims who land on your desk or along the path. These victims will always require health services, representation in court, media coverage or salvation from perpetrators. Be vigilant and willing to help. You play a part in ending the problem and also help victims directly. If every professional worked towards a safer society, it would be easier to end the problem.

Do not entertain this wickedness at personal level. This is especially important for employers and consumers. Only take in persons whose identity and status is verifiable. Buy goods and consume services from organizations that have taken a stand and put measures in place to end the vice. In case you come across such a case, report it to authorities. People around you must know that you do not condone this evil.

Call for attention around human trafficking and make people in your circles to know that they can do something. It is the actions of individuals that lead to changes around the world. Do not miss an opportunity to stop this vice from spreading or helping victims to find relief.
